![]() Model 12's and my Model 42 do not say Nickel steel. of about the same vintage and mine also says Nickel steel on the barrel. You could have a good gunsmith check your chamber length and he could tell you if the barrel isn't marked. The vented rib is a plus, most of them were made by Simmons and added at the factory as a custom order or could also be done in a gun shop. ![]() It should also say Full, Mod or Cyl after the Model 12. Along with the patent dates on your barrel, it should say 2 3/4" or 2 5/8" or something similar to give the designation of the chamber. Before, most shotgun barrels were made from Damascus or twist laminated barrels that would probably not hold up to the higher pressures of smokeless powder but were safe to shoot correct charges of bp. Nickel steel was one of the types of steel they made barrels out of pretty soon after the switch to smokeless powder. It was made in 1924 according to George Maadi's Winchester Model 12 book by the serial number series.
